TELEM Community Organizing In Action

Spotlight on Temple Emanuel's Teen Organizers!

In 2006, Newton's Temple Emanuel teens discovered that they shared a passionate concern about the environment and sought a way to have an immediate impact. They learned that the City of Newton's recycling program was limited to residential properties. Working with adults in the congregation, they succeeded in securing a commitment from Newton's mayor to pilot an expansion of the city's recycling program to include religious institutions, beginning with Temple Emanuel. Their sustained efforts resulted in a permanent change; the City's contract was rewritten to include churches and synagogues.
