Literacy Curriculum

The Literacy Curriculum has been developed by Spark: the Center for Jewish Learning at the Jewish Funds for Justice and the Greater Boston Jewish Coalition for Literacy (GBJCL). The GBJCL is a literacy tutoring program of the Jewish Community Relations Council that engages adult volunteers from various Jewish congregations and organizations throughout Greater Boston.

The TELEM Literacy Curriculum offers teen literacy volunteers an opportunity to learn about literacy-related issues and offers specific how-to-skills to prepare them for their service as  reading and literacy tutors. The curriculum also offers Jewish text study to explore the history of Jewish responses to literacy and education issues and to provide a context for tikkun-olam, or repairing the world through their work as literacy tutors.

Lessons include:

  • Kehilla: Building a Community of Service
  • Skills Training: Read Aloud
  • Being a Role Model
  • Understanding Literacy
  • Literacy, Public Schools and Education Funding
